Siklu mmWave Wireless Helps Protect Lady Liberty

Connecting Battery Park and Liberty Park to Ellis Island and Liberty Island to enhance safety and security at The Statue of Liberty

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA – March 10, 2020 Siklu, a global leader in Fixed 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) technology for Gigabit Wireless Access, Smart City and security networks announced today that its millimeter wave (mmWave) solutions have been deployed at the Statue of Liberty to provide high speed, secure and interference free connection to the mainland.

Providing security for our national monuments is one of the primary concerns for the National Parks Service. Many of our greatest treasure as a country are often natural environments, or monuments that are located in highly scenic environs. What they have in common is minimal availability of wireline connectivity to support video surveillance and other security systems. This is the situation for the Statue of Liberty located on Liberty Island in the NYC harbor.

There are no high-speed wireline connections between Liberty Island and Manhattan or New Jersey, the two closest areas with fiber availability. Connecting the island across the harbor which has heavy ship traffic and delivering the gigabit speeds needed is a major challenge. Security on the island is supported by a large network of video cameras generating tens if not hundreds of Mbps of traffic. All of which needs to be off-loaded from the island to the mainland fiber network.

When the National Park Service reached out to Total Recall, an experienced and trusted Security Systems Integrator, they knew exactly how to deliver the speed, reliability and security needed for this project. The approach taken by Total Recall, a Convergint Technologies company, was to use mmWave solutions from Siklu Communications. Siklu offers a variety of mmWave solutions with a choice of capacities (1Gbps to 10Gbps Full Duplex) and distances supported. By using mmWave to connect Battery Park and Liberty Park to Ellis Island and ultimately Liberty Island the height requirements for the wireless network were greatly reduced. Due to the narrow pencil beams used in mmWave, the radio connections can avoid ship traffic without being mounted on hundred-foot towers, as well as avoid suffering from reflections off the water.

The frequencies used as well as the narrow beams, also ensures that not only is interference not a concern today, but it will never be an issue for these connections. On one end of this network are an array of Axis HD fixed, PTZ and thermal cameras all connected to the mainland via Siklu mmWave. A Genetec™ Security Center unified security platform is used for monitoring and recording the video surveillance system.

This project was deployed in Q4 of 2019, vastly upgrading the existing system in capacity and moving away from potential interference issues with the existing system. The result is a high speed, secure and interference free connection to the mainland. In addition, with the massive amount of available capacity, the network is designed for future scalability and to support any additional applications that may arise. The net result from this project is exactly what the National Park Service was looking for – enhancing safety and security at one of our most iconic national monuments – The Statue of Liberty.
